Iyer, who came to bat at number five against Afghanistan, made an aggressive start and completed 3000 runs in One Day International (ODI) cricket and proved why he remains one of the most reliable batsmen in the middle order in the 50-over format. Ahead of the milestone, Shreyas Iyer received huge praise from Mohammed Azharuddin.

Shreyas Iyer completes 3000 ODI runs during IND vs AFG match in Lucknow
As Yashasvi Jaiswal was recalled to the playing eleven, recently appointed Indian T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and even Shubman Gill were moved back into the batting order in the ongoing second ODI against Afghanistan in Lucknow.
After Ishan Kishan was out at 125 in the 37th over, India’s new T20I captain came to bat and started with a quick single. Since Gill was in full swing and had scored a record century, Iyer didn’t have much to offer, yet he managed to join the club of legends like the great Kapil Dev and Virender Sehwag.
The stylish right-handed batsman reached the 3000-run mark in just 72 ODI innings, making him the joint second-fastest Indian batsman to reach there, showing his remarkable consistency in the format.

Iyer has now scored 3000 ODI runs at an impressive average of 46.15 with the help of 5 centuries and 23 half-centuries in 78 matches. His highest ODI score is 128 not out.

Shreyas Iyer becomes joint second fastest Indian to score 3000 ODI runs
Well, Shreyas Iyer has entered an exclusive list of Indian batting stars by reaching the milestone of 3000 ODI runs. As he achieved the feat in just 72 innings, the right-handed batsman became the joint second fastest Indian batsman along with Shikhar Dhawan to reach the feat.
For India, only Shubman Gill has been the fastest to reach 3000 ODI runs, he did so in 62 innings. Virat Kohli took 75 innings, while KL Rahul and Navjot Sidhu needed 78 and 79 innings respectively.
In terms of balls faced, the 31-year-old batsman is now the third fastest Indian to complete 3000 ODI runs. Kapil Dev is the fastest, followed by Shubman Gill, while Iyer is ahead of former explosive opener Virender Sehwag in the elite list.
Shreyas Iyer’s historic day ends with disappointment
However, Iyer gave away his wicket cheaply after reaching the milestone in Lucknow. Nangeyalia Kharoti dismissed the Indian batsman when he was trying to accelerate the scoring. Kharoti bowled the full ball straight onto the stumps and the Indian vice-captain attempted a big shot past the long-on boundary.
However, the ball was a little too full, so Iyer could not get enough height on his shot. As a result, the ball went high but not very far, and Ibrahim Zadran moved sharply to his right near the long-on region and completed a brilliant catch as Iyer walked back for 26 off 24 balls, which included a four and a six.
Well, thanks to remarkable centuries from Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill, India posted a mammoth score of 402 runs on the board in the ongoing 2nd ODI against Afghanistan. Rohit Sharma also contributed 48 runs in this huge score against Afghanistan. Nangeyalia Kharoti and Rashid Khan together took seven wickets against India in Lucknow.
