According to a report in Times of India, Team India cricketer Shardul Thakur has been punished for disciplinary violations during the ongoing T20 Mumbai League. The veteran fast bowler faced action from the match officials after showing dissent against the umpiring decision on the field during the match.

The incident occurred during the match between Eagle Thane Strikers and Akash Tigers MWS at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, June 3. The contest ended in dramatic fashion, with Eagle Thane Strikers losing by one run after Amartya Raje was run out on the second-last ball of the final over.

According to a social media update by Times of India journalist Gaurav Gupta, Shardul Thakur was found guilty of violating the code of conduct of the T20 Mumbai League. The fast bowler was charged with a Level 2 offense for abusing the umpire during the match.

After a review, the league officials fined Shardul Thakur Rs 20,000 and gave him three demerit points. The punishment was handed down after an investigation into the incident by tournament officials.

Eagle Thane strikers miss thrilling one-run defeat

Eagle Thane Strikers, led by Shardul Thakur, were in a strong position during the chase but collapsed late and lost by one run. Chasing 173, the Strikers were all out for 171 in 19.5 overs.

Earlier, Akash Tigers MWS scored 172/9 in their 20 overs, with Joey Bista scoring 56 runs in 40 balls. Shardul opened the bowling and bowled an economical spell of 0/11 in two overs. While chasing the target, Sumeer Zaveri scored 26 runs, Sairaj Patil scored 39 runs and Siddhant Singh scored 37 runs.

Coming in at number eight, Shardul played an important inning of 25 runs in 15 balls, which included one four and two sixes. However, his dismissal off the bowling of Jamshed Alam in the 18th over proved crucial. The match eventually ended with Amartya Raje being run out by Naman Pushpak on the second-last ball of the innings.

Ahead of IPL 2026, Shardul Thakur returned to his home franchise, Mumbai Indians, after the team bought him from Lucknow Super Giants in a deal worth Rs 2 crore. The move generated a lot of excitement and there were high expectations from the experienced all-rounder ahead of the new season.

However, Mumbai Indians struggled throughout the campaign and finished ninth on the points table. The five-time champions failed to find consistency, resulting in their worst season in recent years.

Shardul also had to face a difficult tournament. He took 12 wickets in nine matches but gave runs at an economy rate of 12.27. His performance in IPL 2025 was disappointing, when he finished as the leading wicket-taker for Lucknow Super Giants with 13 wickets.
