Rahmanullah Gurbaz produced one of the finest ODI innings of his career during the first ODI between India and Afghanistan at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala on Friday, June 13. The Afghanistan opener launched a brutal attack on the Indian bowling attack and single-handedly put his team in a strong position after India decided to field first.
Despite wickets falling around him, Rahmanullah Gurbaz kept the scoreboard moving at a remarkable pace. The right-handed batsman blended power with timing, punished any loose ends and scored a record-breaking century against India. However, just when it looked like he would bat deep early in the innings, Nitish Kumar Reddy produced a brilliant performance to end the carnage.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored a brilliant century against India
Gurbaz was at his destructive best right from the start and never allowed the Indian bowlers to survive. Rahmanullah Gurbaz completed his century in just 48 balls, the fastest ODI century for Afghanistan and the second fastest ODI century scored against India.
The wicketkeeper-batsman hit eight fours and eight sixes during his sensational innings of 102 runs off just 51 balls at a whopping strike rate of 200.00. His innings helped Afghanistan recover from the initial shock and kept India under pressure in the first half of the innings.
The century was Gurbaz’s ninth ODI century, increasing his lead as Afghanistan’s most successful century-maker in this format. Ibrahim Zadran and Mohammad Shehzad are next on the list with six ODI centuries each.

Gurbaz also strengthened his remarkable conversion rate in ODI cricket. Among batsmen with at least seven ODI centuries, their conversion rate from fifties to centuries is now an incredible 56.25%, the best in the history of the format.

India were in desperate need of a breakthrough as Rahmanullah Gurbaz threatened to take the game away from them. Captain Shubman Gill turned to Nitish Kumar Reddy and the all-rounder responded with a brilliant ball.
On the third ball of the 16th over, Reddy bowled a pinpoint inswinging yorker at a speed of 134 kilometers per hour. The ball landed straight at the base of the middle stump and Gurbaz had no chance to manoeuvre.
Attempting to dig it out and flick it towards mid-on, Gurbaz opened his stance and ducked down, but the ball went under the bat and crashed into the middle stump.
The dismissal brought an end to a breathtaking innings and led to celebrations in the Indian camp. Gurbaz could only stand and watch as one of the best balls of the innings uprooted his middle stump.
The wicket read 142/4, bringing an end to the brilliant innings that Afghanistan had commanded.
