Sachin Tendulkar has come

India Under-19 captain Ayush Mhatre took to his official Instagram account on Monday, February 9, to share an emotional video capturing one of his most memorable days as a cricketer.

Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar presented Mhatre with a special signed jersey following India’s successful campaign in the recently concluded Under-19 World Cup, where the Boys in Blue defeated England to lift the trophy.

In the summit clash of the tournament, Team India played dominantly, mostly supported by 14-year-old opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who recorded an extraordinary innings of 175 off 80, the best ever in the history of the Under-19 World Cup final. Mhatre contributed with a half-century as India posted a mammoth score of 411 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in the 50 overs limit.

This target proved to be very big for the English batsmen who came to chase the target in the second innings. Under pressure, England Under-19 scored 311 runs for all 10 wickets, which was a good enough score, but not enough to overtake India.

The Indian cricket youth team claimed the title on 6 February, and Mhatre shared the video three days later, on 10 February, with the caption, “I have grown up watching you through the screen. Today, I stand at your house, a piece of your journey in my hands. Thank you for this honor sir. I will hold it with the same respect with which you have taken Indian cricket forward over the years.”

Ayush Mhatre did a good job as a batsman

Ayush Mhatre did a good job as a batsman behind the success of the team. The 18-year-old batsman scored 214 runs in seven innings at an average of 30.57 and a strike rate of 113.22, which included three half-centuries. Mhatre won the trophy as the sixth captain of the Indian under-19 national cricket team, after Mohammad Kaif, Virat Kohli, Unmukt Chand, Prithvi Shaw and Yash Dhull.

The emerging talent will be back with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to play the IPL 2026 season. He joined the franchise midway through the IPL 2025 season as a replacement for injured captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. Mhatre’s inclusion proved vital to the future of the team.

CSK showed confidence in Ayush Mhatre

The right-handed batsman scored 240 runs in seven innings for CSK at an average of 34.28 and a strike rate of 188.97 in seven IPL 2025 matches. These figures were driven by an innings of 94 runs and a half-century.

Ahead of the IPL 2026 mini auction, Chennai Super Kings showed confidence in Mhatre’s talent by retaining him for the next season. For CSK in the last edition of the Indian Premier League, he came into limelight mostly because of his aggressive batting approach. But for India, he tried to bat with a less careless attitude. It will be interesting to see in which role CSK would like to use the batsman in the upcoming season.
