Mass resignation puts SLC in danger

The report comes at a time when Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) itself was in crisis for more than 48 hours due to the mass resignation of officials from the office including the Board Chairman. Due to increasing allegations of corruption, top officials of the SLC, including the Chairman himself, resigned from their posts. A new committee of officers and officials is yet to be announced.

“The President of Sri Lanka Cricket, Mr. Shammi Silva has resigned from his post, with effect from today. Along with him, the office bearers and members of the Executive Committee of the SLC have also submitted their resignations,” read the official statement issued by the board.

“This decision has been formally communicated to His Excellency the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the Honorable Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mr. Sunil Kumara Gamage,” it said.

Why did the President resign?

Shammi Silva met the country’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and discussed the situation and the increasing pressure on him for a long time. It is believed that Silva and his colleagues decided to leave their jobs on the board at the request of the country’s President.

At present, a new ‘Change Committee’ has been formed to deal with this unique situation. According to multiple media reports, the newly formed committee will be led by MP Aron Wickramaratne and will include famous cricket personalities Kumar Sangakkara And Roshan Mahanama.
