New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has dismissed assistant coaches Luke Ronchi and Jacob Oram ahead of the T20 series against South Africa. The board allowed him to temporarily leave the national team to take up new coaching assignment with Islamabad United in the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) season.
The PSL 2026 season is scheduled to begin on March 26 and will be played till the end of April. The coaching duo will miss the five-match home T20 series against South Africa and the subsequent limited overs tour of Bangladesh. Ronchi, who played for Islamabad United from 2017 to 2021, will be their head coach.
It’s a big chance for Luke Ronchi and Jacob Oram – Mike Sandel
Black Caps performance manager Mike Sandel said the board supported Luke Ronchi and Jacob Oram joining PSL teams. He emphasized that gaining international exposure in foreign leagues would mutually benefit the coaches and the national system.

“This is a great opportunity for Luke and Jake to further their coaching experience and develop their skills outside of the New Zealand cricket environment,” Sandell said.
“Like our players, our coaches are in demand around the world and we believe Luke and Jake will not only benefit individually from their time in the PSL, but will also be able to bring back knowledge and IP that can assist the Blackcaps and NZC in the future.”
Temporary coaching replacements announced by New Zealand for the upcoming series
With the regular assistant coaches absent, NZC announced temporary replacements. Wellington coach Jonny Bassett-Graham and network coach Graeme Aldridge will assist head coach Rob Walter during the South Africa series. Canterbury coach Brendan Donkers will be included for the Bangladesh tour.
“One of the added bonuses of Luke and Jake going to the PSL is the opportunity they get to meet other coaches in the NZC network,” Sandel said.
“It will be great for Jonny, Graeme and Brendan to join the Blackcaps and I am sure they will enjoy their time in this environment and experience working with our players and support staff.
“Their involvement will naturally help strengthen our high-performance coaching depth and we hope the coaches themselves will be able to take back some of what they have learned to benefit the domestic set-up.”
Upcoming events for the New Zealand national team
New Zealand will play South Africa in five T20 matches from March 15 to March 25. The first match will be played at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. These games will be played as double-headers with the women’s team competing against the South Africa women’s team.
Following the conclusion of home matches against South Africa, the New Zealand men’s national team will travel to Bangladesh in April. On that foreign tour, he has to play three One Day International and three T20 International matches.
Notably, the exact scheduling dates have not been announced yet. The team will need to rely on its temporary coaching staff to navigate these different formats.
